This year’s New York City Pride March will be a historic one as several sports leagues march in the parade for the first time ever.
The MLB and NFL are making their pride march debuts along with returning NHL, NBA, and WNBA leagues. Both leagues will march and ride along their fellow teammates in floats as they support pride up Fifth Avenue.
The National Football League will have a float in the parade that features former NFL player Ryan O’Callaghan, who came out publicly last year and Wade Davis, who often works closely with the league to further conversations about LGBTQ inclusion, will also be featured on the float. San Francisco 49ers coach Katie Sowers will march as well.
Major League Baseball will feature around 200 employees in the march, including former MLB umpire Dale Scott and MLB executive and former player Billy Bean, who are both openly gay.
The NBA and WNBA were the first leagues to officially support the Pride March when they participated in 2016, including NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and WNBA President Lisa Border that marched in the past.
The annual march is held in Manhattan to celebrate LGBTQ culture and pride. This year, tennis legend Billie Jean King will serve as one of the Grand Marshals of NYC Pride.
The Pride march will begin on Seventh Avenue and West 16th Street at noon on June 24.
