Leondra Head’s Reflection

It was a great pleasure being hosted by the NASCAR Opinion Leader Initiative to cover the Xfinity NASCAR race, the VA 529. Excitement and enthusiasm filled my soul as I was given media credentials to report on my first NASCAR race. Being behind the scenes of the race was intense, from seeing NASCAR drivers casually walk by to the pit crew speed out onto the track to do speedy maintenance on the NASCAR’s was quite the night.

Bubba Wallace, an insightful driver of the NASCAR Xfinity series was a gracious driver I met before the race began. He gladly welcomed Hampton University’s National Association of Black Journalists chapter to the Xfinity series. As he greeted each of us, he went down the line to shake each of our hands while telling his story of how he became involved in NASCAR. He became a professional driver at age 20 in 2012.

“NASCAR is a high intensity sport. You either love it or hate it”, Wallace said.

It was clear after speaking with him that he loves it.

I watched inquisitively as Kyle Busch’s car passed the finish line. We soon walked over to Victory Lane where the winner of the Xfinity Series race, Kyle Busch, was awarded the official NASCAR Xfinity Series trophy and photographed for the “Hat Party”. His wife, Samantha Busch and family stood by him proudly.

Samantha Busch, stayed after for a few minutes to give us some great words of encouragement.

“It’s great that you all are here representing your college. This is a great night. Kyle and I are proud of his big win tonight”, she said.

I left the NASCAR Xfinity Series with more knowledge about NASCAR and compelled by my experience hosted the NASCAR Multicultural Development team.
